How to live in this season ?

Name of Rutu (Season) –  Vasant (Spring)

Vasant Rutu (Spring Season)

The approximate time of this season is from mid-March to mid-May. This season is considered as season of flowering and origin of new leaves in nature. So Spring (Vasant) is the best season for detoxification of body, because nature is already trying to clear out the toxins. Predominant  Rasa  and  Mahabhuta during this season are Kashaya(astringent), and  Prithvi and Vayu  respectively. Strength of the person remains in medium degree, vitiation of Kapha Dosha occurs.  Kapha  which has undergone increase(Sanchay) in Hemant-Shishira Ritu(cold season) becomes liquefied (Kapha Prakop) by the heat of the Sun in Vasant (spring). It diminishes the digestive fire (Agni) and gives rise to many diseases. Hence Kapha should be controlled quickly by Panchakarma procedure / therapies (i.e. Detoxification of Body).

Do’s

  • Cereals – old barley, wheat, rice etc
  • Pulses – lentil, Mung dal etc
  • Take easily digestible food.
  • Meats like Shahsa, which are easy to digest can be taken.
  • Beverages such as asava (fermented infusion), arista (fermented decoction), sidhu (fermented juice), sarambu (extract of trees such as asana, candana etc.), honey mixed with water and water boiled with Ayurvedic herbs.
  • Rasa ( taste of food) – Tikta(bitter), Katu(pungent), and  Kashaya  (astringent)  should be taken.
  • Honey should be taken in the diet.
  • Do Exercise
  • Dry powder massage

Don’ts

  • Avoid food – hard to digest and fatty in nature.
  • Avoid sleep during day time
  • Sheeta(cold), Snigdha (viscous), Guru(heavy), Amla (sour), Madhura  (sweet ) foods should be avoided.
  • New grains, curd, cold drinks should be avoided.

Lifestyle

  • Use warm water for bathing purpose during Vasant Ritu.
  • Udvartana (massage) with powder of Chandanaetc
  • Panchkarma such as Vamana, Snehan, Swedan, Kavala (gargle), Dhooma, Anjana (collyrium) and Nasya are advised.
  • Day-sleep is strictly contraindicated during this season.
  • Drink the juices like mango fruit mixed with fragrant substances, in the company of friends, the drink thereby producing satisfaction ( Mind Relaxation).
  • One should spend his midday in the company of friends engaged in pleasant games, pastimes, storytelling etc., in forests (or gardens). The gardens should have cool breeze, with plenty of reservoirs of water all around,  invisible or poor  sunlight, with  the  birds everywhere making pleasant  sounds, with trees and different kinds of beautiful  and sweet smelling flowers.

Reason behind the above rules in Vasant Ritu is to control Kapha dosha and maintain balance between three Dosha of the Body.
