Spondylosis and Ayurveda
Now a days, the number of people complaining of Spondylosis, also known as Spinal Osteoarthritis and it is rising rapidly. The human body is supported by the vertebral column which provides motility and stability so that person can remain upright all the day. In the normal position, the spine has a slight ‘S’ shaped curve. This curve allows even distribution of weight of the upper body parts. The joints in the spine can twist or bend with little friction between the vertebrae. Spondylosis is a degenerative that may cause loss of normal spine function and posture. The commonly involved parts in this condition are the Discs, Joints and ligaments of the spine. The discs lose their cushioning effect between the spinal bones, the ligaments become weak. The bones develop spurs/bony growths. These changes can compress one or more nerve roots which lead to very painful condition.
Ayurvedic view of Spondylosis
Vata Vyadhi (Disorder) is a disorder that arises in the body due to vitiation of Vata. There is a group of disease clubbed under Vata Vyadhi in Ayurveda. One of the main function of Vata Dosha is to maintain the appropriate separating between the various parts of organs and the body from each other. This function gets distorted in vitiated condition of Vata Dosha resulting into increased porosity in the affected bones and joints. This is commonly known as Degenerative disorder. Along with this the vitiated vata dosha minimises lubricant present in the various joints. This lubricant is one of the five types of Kapha Dosha which not only lubricates but also helps to provide nourishment to the joints. Decrease in the lubricant results in restricted and painful joint movements.
