The migraine is a severe, painful headache. The pain is usually felt on one side of the head. . Migraine and headache are leading causes of OPD patients and remains an important public health problem, particularly among women during their reproductive years. Migraine is commonly misdiagnosed as tension-type headache or sinus headache.

Pain that is often preceded or may be accompanied by experience of flashing lights, zigzag lines, bright spots, partial loss of vision, or numbness or tingling in the hand, tongue, or side of the face. nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. The pain can last for hours or even days. Migraines and other types of headaches, such as tension headache and sinus headache, are painful.  Migraine symptoms include a pounding headache, nausea, vomiting, and light-sound sensitivity. One may Moving around makes the headache worse.

While no medical tests confirm migraine, the diagnosis is based mainly on the above-mentioned symptoms. Many scientists think migraine is a vascular disorder caused by a tightening (constriction) and sudden opening (dilation) of the blood vessels in the head, neck, or scalp. Others believe that an abnormal release of neuro-chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin or noradrenaline may cause the throbbing pain of migraine.

In Ayurveda, condition known as Ardhavabhedak (meaning the unilateral pain) resemble the classical migraine.

Causes

(The exact cause of migraine headaches is unknown; it is thought to be due to abnormal brain activity causing a temporary alteration in the nerve signals, chemicals and blood flow in the brain)

  • Bright / flickering lights, loud noises, smoky rooms, temperature changes, strong smells of certain odors or perfumes
  • Physical or emotional stress, tension, anxiety, depression, excitement
  • Tiredness, Heavy exercise
  • Sleeping in day time, Changes in sleep patterns, irregular sleep
  • Skipping meals or fasting
  • Foods – aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, some beans, red wine, monosodium
  • Excess use of other foods such as chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, banana, citrus, onions, dairy products and fermented or pickled foods
  • Smoking or exposure to smoke
  • Alcohol
  • Allergies and allergic reactions
  • Hormonal changes such as menstrual cycle fluctuations, birth controlpills, menopause
  • Tension headaches
  • Medication such as sleeping tablets, the contraceptive pill, hormone replacement therapy.

Symptoms

Although not all migraines are the same, typical symptoms include:-

  • Pain, usually confined to one side of the head during an attack
  • Pain is usually a severe, throbbing, pulsing pain
  • Increasing pain during physical activity
  • Inability to perform regular activities due to pain
  • Feeling sick and physically being sick
  • Increased sensitivity to light and sound, relieved by lying quietly in a darkened room
  • Some people experience other symptoms such as sweating, temperature changes (feverish), abdominal pain and diarrhea.
