Autism Spectrum Disorder,Children and Ayurveda
Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and developmental language and communication skills, and by rigid / restricted and repetitive behavior. Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now called autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is three years old.
In Ayurveda’s view, Autism is due to gross imbalance of Vata dosha in the body, especially Pran and Udan are get vitiated, controlling all mental and neural functions.
Causes

- Rubella (German Measles) infection in the pregnant mother.
Early signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorder
The child
- Doesn’t understand simple one-step instructions
- Doesn’t consistently respond to his/her name
- Doesn’t smile at caregivers
- Doesn’t use gestures independently (doesn’t wave bye-bye without being told to, or without copying someone else who is waving )
- Doesn’t show interest in other children
- Doesn’t enjoy or engage in various games
- Doesn’t use eye contact to get someone’s attention or communicate
- Has an intense interest in certain objects and becomes ‘stuck’ on particular toys or objects
- Easily upset by change and must follow routines ( sleeping, feeding or leaving the house must be done in the same way every time )
- Extremely sensitive to sensory experiences – for example, he’s easily upset by certain sounds, or will only eat foods with a certain texture
- seeks sensory stimulation ( deep pressure etc. )
Management – Treatment
- Ayurvedic Panchkarma Detoxification (By removing the endotoxins and correcting the digestion and metabolism )
- Snehan ( Abhyang )
- Vaman ( Laghu ) (as per Ayurveda Doctor’s advice )
- Basti
- Nasya ( specific nasal drops)
- Shirodhara
- Removing the external and internal stress (by introducing more wholesome lifestyle, nutrition and social elements )
- Education for the whole family is important
- Routine in sleep, exercise
- Nutrition and eating plan

- Create a home safety zone
- Make time for fun
- Be consistent.
- Stick to a schedule.
- Reward good behavior.
- Look for nonverbal cues.
- Figure out the motivation behind the tantrum.
- Live healthy.
- Don’t take drugs during pregnancy and during lactation
- Avoid alcohol.
- Seek treatment for existing health conditions.
- Get vaccinated.

- Peanuts
- Preservatives,
- Food colors,
- food additives,
- Food insecticides, pesticides
