Abhyanga / Massage and Ayurveda

Abhyanga (Snehan ) is well known Ayurvedic Panchkarma Therapy that involves massage of the body with various medicated oils. This is a form of treatment for various vata disorders. Abhyanga is Purva Karma (pre-treatment) for major detoxification Panchkarma procedures like Vaman, Virechan etc. It is often followed by Swedana therapy (steam). The oil is often pre-medicated with herbs for specific conditions. Specific medicated oils are chosen by Ayurveda Doctors according to the body constitution and presenting health problems.

Many times Abhyanga is performed by one or more massage therapists working in sync. Oils used can vary depending on the season and the individual constitution (dosha) of the body but commonly used oils include sesame, coconut.
Abhyanga (अभ्यंग / Oil Massage) massage is traditionally done by two therapists on either side of the patient, who lies on the treatment table. The client lies on a specially designed table, and the massage therapist pours warmed and specially formulated herbal oil over his or her body. Sesame and coconut oils are commonly used, along with an assortment of herbs. The oil is allowed to soak in for several minutes.

With Ayurvedic massage, deep-seated toxins in the joints and tissues are loosened and released into the system for elimination through natural toxin-release system.
