Insomnia
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. People with insomnia have trouble sleeping, difficulty falling asleep, or staying asleep as long as desired even though one had the opportunity to get a full night of sleep. The causes, symptoms and severity of insomnia vary from person to person. Insomnia involves both a sleep disturbance and daytime symptoms. Insomnia can occur at any age, but it is particularly common in the elderly. Insomnia can be short term (up to three weeks) or long term (above 3–4 weeks); it can lead to memory problems, depression, irritability and an increased risk of heart disease and automobile related accidents. Insomnia is most often thought of as both a medical sign and a symptom that can accompany several sleeps, medical, and psychiatric disorders characterized by a persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep or sleep of poor quality.
In Ayurveda, Insomnia is known as Anidra. According to the Ayurvedic perspective, the vitiation of the three doshas either taken all together or individually may result in to insomnia. (Mainly – Tarpak Kapha, Sadhak Pitta or Prana Vata.)
