Fibroid of uterus is a benign tumor that originates from the smooth muscle layer (myometrium) and accompanying connective tissue of d uterus.
Uterine fibroid grows fast as they are stimulated by increased production of female hormone estrogen.
They are more common in late thirties of age. They shrink in size with onset of menopause.
TYPES:
Depending on location:
- Intramural : fibroid formed in wall of uterus. Most common type.
- Cervical: fibroid formed in neck of uterus.
- Submucosal: fibroid formed in muscle beneath the endometium of uterus.
- Subserosal: fibroid formed underneath mucosal surface in uterus.
CAUSES:
Exact cause is not known but probable causes are
- High estrogen hormone level in women.
- Family history of fibroids.
- Obesity
SYMPTOMS:
- Abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Anaemia: excessive bleeding due to fibroids may develop iron deficiency anaemia.
- Frequent or obstructed urination.
- Dull ache in pelvis and abdominal areas.
- They may interfere with pregnancy and may cause infertility.
DIAGNOSIS:
- USG
- MRI/CT SCAN
- HSG (Hystero salpingo gram)
